Meet the Teacher

I'm Jill Vaz and I am born and raised in the infamous New Jersey... and proud of it! :) With NYC and the Jersey shore within reach- there's no place I'd rather be. It is my fourth year teaching first grade and I absolutely L O V E it.  I recently have taken on the role as our K-2 math coach, where I have found a new passion for writing math curriculum and working with teachers to establish the best mathematical teaching practices in the classroom. The school I work in is not necessarily new to me. I am so fortunate to be working alongside all the teachers that made me fall in love with learning at my old elementary school. It is truly a blessing to be working in a place that fills all of my childhood memories and to know that I'm now filling so many others.

I went to UCONN where I studied elementary education, with a concentration in mathematics. I'm kind of a math nerd... I'm almost certain my kiddos love it. Ha! I also hold a Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction, which has sparked my interest in creating and sharing effective and engaging resources to use in a primary classroom.

I wake up each and everyday making my dream a reality. IT'S AWESOME!

    1. Hi Lauren! I am so sorry for the delay! I'd be happy to help answer any questions you have. I"m not sure if you already read my math workshop post but definitely check it out. It was one of my first posts though so I was a bit rusty! My email is vaz.jillian@gmail.com. Please feel free to email me so I can answer any questions! It's my favorite time of day and favorite subject to teach. :)

  3. I love reading your blog. I am a second year first grade teacher. I love integrating my units just like you. I am doing reader's workshop and writer's workshop about the same way so your blog has been very helpful. I would love to see what your daily schedule is. I am having trouble fitting it all in. :)

    1. Scheduling is always a challenge... I always find its best to modify and adjust int he beginning of the year to try different options and find the best fit. My schedule is:
      9:05-9:15- Unpack/morning work
      9:15-9:45- Morning Meeting/Calendar
      9:45-10:30- Math Workshop
10:30-10:45- Snack *sometimes I try to squeeze in a read aloud as they munch :)
      10:45-11:15-Recess
      11:15-11:50- Reader's workshop
      11:50-12:30- Writer's Workshop
      12:30-1:00- Lunch
      1:00-1:35- FUNdations
1:35-2:15- Science/Social Studies- we alter based on the theme/holiday/time of year
      2:15-3:00- Special
3:00-3:30- Shared Literacy (our school uses the balanced literacy approach)
      3:35-3:45- Pack up and Dismissal

      Hope this helps!!!

  4. At the end of the year, how do you store all of your books? I'm packing up now and nothing can be left on the floor (cleaning room). It's difficult for me to find places to store them.
