Hip, Hip, Hooray! It's the 100th Day!

It's that time of year again! It's the 100th Day and it's time to celebrate in style. As if the day couldn't get any crazier, our 100th Day fell on Valentine's Day last year. Lucky for me, it seems it's about to happen again this year too (assuming we have no snow days of course). I was thankful that I had an intern and some parent volunteers help prep materials, which made for a smooth day! 

I'm hoping to share some of the fun activities and ideas I found online that make for the perfect fun filled 100th Day. This post contains affiliate links for your shopping convenience. 

So much of the decor and set up of this day was inspired by my good friend Maria over at Kindercraze. I'm always in awe of how creatively she incorporates color into everything she does! It truly adds a magical touch. She is the genius behind the bold and bright lettering on the banners and backdrops. 

I used a large craft roll of paper and some paint dotters to letter a backdrop to our fashion show (more details below). The smaller paper was used as banner when entering our door. I even added colorful solid and printed streamers to hang from the banner. This is the perfect way to excite and engage students as they eagerly walk into the classroom that day.

One of the most exciting parts of the day is when students get to showcase their 100th Day t-shirt during the fashion show. I play music through YouTube- usually a Kids Bop mix so that it's something the kids can sing along to.

Here are some of the t-shirts from some of the students in my class last year. I love how unique of my student's designer were- their personality and interests truly shine through! I look forward to seeing the designs this year too- I'm thinking of switching mine up this year! I've been Pinteresting but haven't quite found the right one!

In addition to our fashion show, students rotate freely through various counting centers. Each center is a different way we count to 100. Many of the centers are freebies Cara Carroll has so graciously shared with her readers. You can find them and all her festivities here!

THE CENTERS I DO:

1. Roll and Race to 100 using a hundreds grid

2. Using the digits 1-0-0 to create a picture

3. Dollar Exchange- how many ways can you make $1.00

4. 100 Days Smarter- write 4 things you learned on the "100 Days Smarter" anchor chart

5. Read 100 books - students read books in the library and tally how many they read through out the day

6. 100th Day Hat- Ten strips of 10 stickers

7. Tally Ties- 100 tallies on a tie

8. Fruit Loop Necklace- string 100 fruit loops on a piece of yarn

Students don't *have* to complete all the centers. In the past I found that it's better to have more and keep them engaged, than having too much down time. They love having the choice of what to do and when to do it.

I ask for parent volunteers to come in and help manage the stations. Just a tip, the hat and fruit loop necklace station take the longest and could use a few extra volunteers to help speed things up! :)

Spreading the Love this Valentine's Day

When it comes to Valentine's Day in the classroom, this girl is allll about spreading the love! I find as many ways as possible to incorporate all things red and pink with hearts all over into our February activities. :) I'm sharing some of my favorite Valentine's Day activities. On Valentine's Day, we celebrate with a "party" by reading aloud two books from the "Love Monster" series by Rachel Bright.


Then we decorate "love monsters" of our own using the adorable templates from The Teacher Wife. You can find them in Lindsey's store here.

Looking to continue the Love Monster fun?! Grab this math workshop center freebie for you to use with your firsties. We have used them as both a task card center and even a "math around the room! Get those little feet up and moving as much as possible!

It includes two differentiated options and a recording sheet. One is adding two digit numbers and the other is adding groups of tens. This will help you best meet the needs of your students in math workshop.

I downloaded this adorable freebie from The Kindergarten Connection. She used it as an addition mat, along with erasers from the Target dollar spot. Since we have been working on place value and adding two digit numbers, I differentiated for my firsties! We used double dice to roll two two-digit numbers. Then we built the numbers with base ten blocks and add them to find the sum. I printed the center on cardstock and placed them in sleeve protectors.

This is perfect to reinforce 1 to 1 correspondence and addition while engaging our learners! They get such a kick out of the little messages too. Man have they sure changed since my day... "text me" and "tweet me" hahah!

Cara's printables are perfect to be used with the fortune cookie erasers found at the Target Dollar spot. I can't wait to type up messages and put them inside for another math comparing number center!

Moving to one of my favorite parts of my classroom! I always like to surprise my students with a new bookshelf as we begin a new theme or celebrate an upcoming holiday! It truly instills their love of reading and learning.

We have specific bookshelf routines so that it stays neat and organized. While I do allow my students to read the books off the shelf, I encourage them to take extra special care of them. The shelf has a mix of books they have seen before in the Valentine's Day theme book bin in our library, as well as new books that are kept under my reading bench. Students use the shelf as an early finisher activity and therefore aren't allow to put those books in their books bins during the time that they are on the shelf. I also like to keep some books separate for when I do my read alouds and lessons during shared reading.

If you're looking for ways to build up your shelf, I often use my points from Scholastic Reading Club and sales on Amazon to build up my library. 

I love the way that Valentine's Day ties into Kindness Week so perfectly. Its important to take the time to think and reflect on all the things that "fill our hearts." After reading the inspirational "Pete the Cat's Groovy Guide to Love," we do this adorable craftivity by Anna over at Crazy for First Grade.

In reader's workshop we have be practicing to make connections. This is perfect to do with books in a series because your students truly have a good sense of the character. I love the Crankenstein series and found this adorable "Cranky Franky" freebie from Stephanie over at Falling in First. You can find them here.

 The link in her site include many different options for you to differentiate for your kiddos.

My student intern led this lesson and provided my students with a sample model Franky craft. The students simply followed the model and assembled the precut pieces.
